The department of Industrial Biotechnology is one of the youngest, vibrant and radiant departments of GCT. Started in the year 2002, with an aim to train the young students to solve the growing challenges in modern biology and meet up the industrial needs technically in the field of biotechnology. It offers a full time B.Tech Program in Industrial Biotechnology with a sanctioned intake of 120. The department has qualified faculty members having expertise in different disciplines like Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Immunology, Bioprocess Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Downstream Processing etc.
The department has a Biotechnology association (BTA) where all the staff and students are the members. BTA organizes a National level Technical symposium “ELYZIA” every year. Industrial visits have been arranged regularly to the students to inculcate first hand practical experience. Students of the department get the opportunity to undertake projects and summer training in various leading companies and institutions such as SPIC-Chennai, Orchid Phamaceuticals-Chennai, Central Leather Research Institute-Chennai, ONGC, Pasteur Institute of India-Coonoor, CFTRI-mysore, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology - Trivandrum, IIT Mumbai, IIT Chennai, JK Pharma, Britannia, Zenith Biotech, MDRF Chennai, Auro foods - Puducherry etc. Students are placed in core companies as well as software companies like TCS, Wipro, Inautix, IBM, Zifo Technologies, Fruzyme etc., Our students are pursuing M.Tech and Ph.Dprogramme in reputed Indian Institutions such as IIT Guwahati, IIT Kharagpur, IIM Kozhikode, IIT Chennai, NIT Surathkaletc and also pursuing M.S/Ph.D courses in various leading Universities in USA, Germany, UK, Australia etc.
The department has been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation based on its academic performance review.
